Network Stress Test

Where would your supply network break first, and could it survive the break? Network Stress Test is a sandbox for answering that before it happens: build or generate a network of plants, warehouses and customers linked by air, sea and road, then push on it and see what gives.

What it does

  • Builds the networkHundreds of editable production, warehouse and customer nodes and air, sea and road lanes with realistic defaults, generated or imported from CSV, on a world map or a layered diagram.
  • Solves the flowsA real minimum-cost flow solver decides how each product moves, within node and lane capacities, and reports service level, shortfalls and bottlenecks.
  • Tests disruptionsSwitch off or derate any site or lane and re-solve, or scan every element in use to rank the single points of failure (an N-1 contingency analysis).
  • Measures resilienceMonte Carlo sampling of random failures, a time-to-survive against time-to-recover check for each site, and a search for the worst combination of failures.
  • Teaches by doingA guided tutorial walks through one worked example, from finding the weakest point to judging whether it is survivable.

How it is built

The algorithms (the flow solver, the network model, the generator, the contingency scan, the Monte Carlo, the resilience check and the worst-case search) are separate modules, each tested on its own against hand-built networks with known answers, and the whole app was checked end to end in a real browser. A published solver guide explains how to swap in a different flow solver. Everything runs in your browser.

Author

Network Stress Test was designed and built by Daniel Alberto Sepulveda Estay, PhD, founder of Estay Dynamics. He works on system dynamics and network optimisation for supply chain resilience. He holds a PhD from the Technical University of Denmark and an MSc from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and is a council member of the System Dynamics Society.
